I hear plenty these days about 'Common Core Curriculum'. I'm
sadly behind the curve on this issue.
I've spoken to a few teacher friends about this, one spoke
at length. The others made one or two brief but favorable remarks.
The one that spoke at length expressed serious concerns. The
one that struck me was the loss of local control, micromanagement in the
classroom down to the methods of teaching and content!
One that spoke in favor (kind of) said it’s a good idea, but
rolled out too soon. Another won't engage regarding common core, but has cited
quotes from a well-known educator (who
I'm certain I would have profound disagreement) and thinks educational choice is
a bad thing, bad for public education perhaps.
What I do know about common core is that it comes down from
the heavens of Federal Government (ahhh! Bells-a-ringin’ & angels-singin! ).
THAT makes me very skeptical and very nervous. This, sadly, is coming to us; no-
SHOVED on us via ‘No Child Left Behind’ and has since spiraled into another
government monster. Who'd of thunk teachers unions would get behind a Bush?
So while you’re holding on to your guns, free speech and
freedom from unlawful search and seizure get a grip on your kids!
